...Let's have a great year...moving on
The World Croquet Federation has today issued a update to the 'starting scores' table to be
utilized for any games played under this system from today (replacing last year's draft).
The full details of the data analysis and the rational for this change can be found on
the
WCF site.
The on-going trial will again be run throughout this year and you are
invited to give the game a try and, if you wish to, send feedback. Please let them know
your impressions and observations and also provide game results which show the
handicaps and/or DGrades of the players involved
Please use the dedicated email address set up for this purpose "advantagegc@worldcroquet.org"
- again, games played this way do *not* go on your card!.
Blue Sky & members entering names into on-line Diary to turn-up and play
So time to give first cut of year - out came the Allett mower to give a 'once-over' down the
left hand side - courts 2 through 4 were 'striped' and hoops reset on four.
What's not to like - good company from club mates and balls rolling about in bright sunshine.
Busiest day of the year..(so far!), with thirteen members enjoying the 'mild' temperatures - well it is mild for January and winter is still awaited.
Pre-season work party arrived on meteorological spring day to loads of 'White Rabbit'
greetings under the clear blue sky ..ostensibly to dig out foundations for the new Northern
Pavilion, but other jobs were completed too; clearing entrance of storm damaged sign and
court 5 rain shelter, hedge trimming; charging both batteries on Deere & Viking and clearing
hut of mud & autumnal leaves.
Thanks due to ; Sharon, Karen, Vince, Riggey, Jim, Helen, David, Libby & Pete.
Lunch time arrived with Karen & Libby on kitchen duty.. copious bacon or sausage butties poured
out for all.. seconds (& thirds) were mandatory and the order of the day.
After lunch? Well the courts were laid out for games/practice of course.
And after all of these activities; Karen had collected £65 for the Ukrainian Refugees.
Donated via UNICEF before dusk fell..
Today under bright blue skies and 13 deg, though the wind gave a slight chill factor, 8 members
enjoyed the lawns after their first mow with the John Deere.
Lawn 1 hoops were repositioned to provide a more accurate practice.
Can you make a conribution?
a different kind of down-pour
What to do for the best about Covid now that the mask mandate has been dropped along with all 'distancing' guidance we've suffered under for the last two years - well play croquet of course, preferably in the sunshine on fine dry courts. Fortunately Earby delivered just such over the early bank holiday. Not saying we didn't get any rain, we did, but it confined itself to the rules of 'Camelot' - rain once, in the small hours of Monday.
Fourteen players sensibly booked their places in this friendly (either Hcp or Adv) AC format
tournament to be faced with four freshly laid-out courts
In the very first round on Friday, a CA Bronze medal was gained with a further award (Silver)
being earned upon the Saturday by the eventual overall winner.
In line with previous years, the tradition of buttered Hot Cross Buns for all on Good
Friday & choccy Eggs on Sunday were available.
This year it took until the very last round on Monday for the Major trophies to be decided,
such was the competition by those in contention, so after 66 games, the following
overall results were presented;
John Beech Handicap Trophy - Ged Smolskas
Peter Dowdall Cup (adv) - Paul Rigge.
Under 10 Handicap Trophy - Richard Harding
10 & Over Handicap Trophy - David Harding
Fastest Game - David Harding (42mins Vs Lee Hartley)
Most Games - Lee Hartley.
Today saw the working party of five enjoying a lunch break. Lawns mowed, whitelined,
hoops in place, side makers installed and 5 all play all tournament.
Fantastic company. A big thank you also goes to the fairies who have cleaned the club house.
Good luck to our Golf Handicap Team tomorrow.
PS Paul Dowdall won the day with 5 wins. Congratulations Paul.
Today saw a sunny but very breezy days Croquet as the first matches in the 2022 Golf
Croquet Handicap Competition commenced.
Pendle team, Mike, Sheila,Dave and Sharon proved to be very strong opponents only losing
by one game. All the game results were very close and had the results been based on hoops
run Pendle would have had a victory running 95 hoops against Westmorland's 92 hoops.
Tea and cake with friendly, relaxed conversation was enjoyed in the sunshine by all as the
breeze lessened and Pendle wished Westmorland good luck in their future games and a
safe journey home.
Today it was Social Sunday. 6 members turned out. We enjoyed golf croquet and One Ball practice
as Andrea has won through to the One Ball Final at Nottingham on the 8th May through her
primary club Ripon.
Andrea entertained those present at lunch with her latest croquet themed poem.
Look out for our next "Social Croquet"
A big welcome to our latest new member Andrew. Keep up your practice as you are proving to
be a natural at this game. Several of us are trembling with your accuracy and you
have only been 3 times!
Yes, it's true - the 'Northern Pavillion' finally rises from the ground!
Workers responsible for the erection? L-R;
Richard, Vince, Peter, *New* Andrew & Steve (with a little from Libby & Rigge)
The U3A group run by our Graham returned for the new season. Seventeen braved the drizzle but
such was the positivity, the blue sky soon replaced the damp and the clamour for games began.
First session included two newbies (Kathy & Linda - welcome).
First winnerof 2022 - David Ball, (who cruised it).
Peter Wilson;
Happy to report a Full Field of sixteen players assembled in sunshine for a full weekends play.
All went well
Neil smashed the B Class - beating Steve Skelton in the final round.
His handicap triggered from 5 to 4.5 but the attending
CA Handicapper cut him further to 3 (amid cheers and congratulations!) from the field
Neil specially mentioned Liz Wilson (Fylde CC) and Paul Rigge (CA Coach) with whom he has
been practicing and attending NW Coaching sessions.
The tournament ran as a Swiss Amalfi System (Search Wiki) . This concept turned out very well
and did indeed produce the promised last round 'big match'.
The lawns were unusually slow at first, perhaps suffering from the Cotton Mills damp air? But
returned to normal on Sunday with a warm breeze and a little sun.
Libby was a star and really should be thanked by the committee
Cleaned the whole place on Friday and on Sunday morning
Cooked one lunch and provided the afternoon tea and did most of the tidying, wahing up etc
(with Liz)
Today we welcomed the Crake Valley Level Play Golf team to Earby on a bright but blustery day.
Despite some battling performances from the home team, Crake won the match 11-7.
Congratulations go to Mike, winning 4 games, and triggering to 6.
Paul D
Dull start to session but brightened up as afternoon played out Nineteen attendees
and our Graham contested the muliple games.
Week's winner - Syd (who ducked last week).
It is with deepest sadness that we report the passing of club member and former
Treasurer today. As we who knew him know, he put up a brave fight, undergoing
many sessions of Chemo and usually always rallying with a smile. In recent
times however as the body grew weaker the time between his visits to the club got longer.
Our thoughts & prayers, of course, now rest with Gill.
This series has expanded yet again, so that Nationally it now comprises of 26 rounds,
leading to a final weekend with only 16(ish) places available...
will leave that problem for others to ponder..meanwhile at Earby;
What a great day! The sun shone throughout and the wind died for the first time in I don't
know how long.A total of 12 participants were split into 2 groups of 6.
The blocks lead to straight KO starting with QFs for the top four from each block.
The final was competed between Frank Sharps & Tom Grievson (The 2 oldest in the field!) Tom
won 7-4....
Sue L'Anson won the Plate competition with a 7-4 win over Marcia Henderson.
Mention should be made of our own Andrea who lost in the semi final to Tom 5-6, belying
the fact that her index for seeding purposes was reduced by 100 pior to the first draw.
1-Tom Grievson from Frank Sharps, Malcolm Daines, Andrea Widdison,
Special thanks go to Libby for providing wonderful food & two of the visitors Sandy & Sue,
both of whom assisted Libby with the catering.
A good day; enjoyed by all.
Another windy but warm(-ish) day saw the Chester arrive in Earby for their short lawn match.
Thanks must go to Robin, Ged and Gabby whose last minute call ups ensured the game could
go ahead.
The first three rounds went 2 games each leaving it 12-12 before the final round which
turned out to be 2.5 - 15.5 to Pendle. But why the (half)? It turns out that Gabby and Pat's
last game went to time and after their final turns was still 8-8. Thinking that was it
they finished the game as a draw, rather than going to a golden hoop, and they started
packing up the lawn.
Result: Pendle & Craven 8.5, Chester 7.5 (tbc)
I'm not sure if the result will stand as is, because Gabby and Pat did agree to end as
a draw or that game will be nulled or something else? I have sent the results to
David Cornes with an explanation. So we'll see..
Paul D
Bright warm sunshine, full blue sky but numbers attending got hit by the road from Skipton
being totally closed for road-works. So fourteen made it via the back roads for todays play.
Week's winner - Marie, after a shoot at the peg from penalty area tie-break with David

In total fourteen members attended this years Finals Day and enjoyed some very good weather
and excellent croquet.
The semi finals of the Skelton Trophy (Golf Croquet Handicap) and the Fort Hoop (Level Play Golf) were contested in the morning using the competition hoop settings from the CA Inter Club match from the day before. Those not involved in the finals enjoyed some social play with bonus coaching from Lorna.
In the Skelton Semi final David Carpenter beat Karen Bamforth 7/5 and Mike Bradbury beat Tom 7/5.
The Final between Mike and David was a thrilling match with it going to the golden hoop. Mike won 7/6.
The Fort Hoop semi's were between Tom Dewar vs Karen Bamforth and Raul Rigge vs Paul Dowdall.
The Final was contested by Tom and Paul Rigge, with Paul winning 7/5.
After all the games had been played Karen undertook the Presentations for all the 2021 Internal
competitions.
Barlow Ball (AC Advanced). Paul Rigge
Aston Trophy (AC handicap) Paul Rigge
Fort Hoop ( GC LevelPlay) Paul Rigge.
Skelton Trophy ( GC Handicap) Mike Bradbury
Congratulations to Sharon for the fabulous lunch she provided. It was interesting that everyone
went back for seconds as it was that good and the pudding was to die for.
Not to be out done Karen's afternoon tea was superb. A large choice of cake and scones was
enjoyed by all.
Still got the road works, but 15 made it over to us today. Again the afternoon brightened up
Week's winner - Michael in the last well fought, well supported game of the day
Team travelled down to Chester in the rain..but as we arrived (at 9:55), it stopped and the day brightened up to delivery a bright, dry, fun match.
The format was Advanced Doubles in the morning and the scores were
Steve & John vs Phil E and Nigel (+13)
Neil & Phil S (+ 11) vs Derek W and Julian
Jim and Betty (4 bisques not to be used on lift shots) (+ 3) vs Terry and Derek J
So 2 -1 to the North West at lunch
In the afternoon the top three players on both teams played advanced with all three games
going with the better handicapped player to Croquet North
Steve vs Phil E (+6)
Neil vs Derek W (+4)
Jim vs Terry (+10)
The handicap games however went The North West Federation way
John (+8) vs Derek J
Phil S (+7) vs Nigel
Betty (+4) vs Julian
It was a wonderful day with all games played in good spirit and with some close matches
Well done all, Liz
Members David Magee & Paul Rigge attended this Advanced Tournament
Loads of fun with mixed results for both during the Weekend, but Riggey eventually lifted
the silverware.
The Pendle team were greeted by our hosts in the Car Park of the English Heritage property
of Belsay Hall after a 2 hour 40 min journey for half of the Pendle team (3 hours for the others).
A warming cup of tea and good chatter commenced the day within some beautiful gardens and 2 croquet
lawns. The first round of games commenced under ever darkening skies that delivered the
threatening rain within a short period of time. This did not put off the players and the games
collected a viewing gallery from the public visitors to the Hall.
Our gracious and generous hosts provided a most extensive 2 course lunch and hot cups of tea
and coffee . All of which was most appreciated to keep at bay the cold and damp.
Morning;
Doubles
Eric/David lost to Paul/Libby 2/7, 4/7
Singles
Chris beat Karen 7/5,7/5
Derek beat Mike 7/6,7/6
Afternoon
Eric lost to Paul 5/7,7/5,4/7
David lost to Libby 1/7,5/7
Chris lost to Mike 0/7,5/7
Derek beat Karen 7/5,7/6
The match was closely fought and came down to the final game between Eric and Paul as the
match stood at 3 all. Paul won through to win the third game to give Pendle the overall win.
Outcome: Pendle win 4 over Belsay 3.
We look forward to playing at Belsay Hall again if the opportunity arises.
Just 12 came today- probably because of half term family commitments.
Julia B was this week's winner, which seemed fitting as she had brought delicious,
home-baked Jubilee buns for everyone to enjoy at the break.
Mike Bradbury, Penny Clark, Karen Bamforth and David Carpenter traveled to Fylde for the 2nd
fixture of this year.
The morning starting dry but the gentle rain which fell until lunchtime did not dampen the spirits
of either side.
Fylde won by 4, games but with 95 hoops run by each team it was a close run match with many of
the games being decided on the 13th hoop. A good day was had by all. - Karen.
Three club members (& Bob) played at this year's AC County Championship, Paul R & Lorna D (Lancashire) &
Robert E (Yorkshire).
After four campaign days, Yorkshire gained promotion and will join Lancashire
in the topflight (Division 1) next year.

for the details.
17 competitors turned up for the 8 trophies on offer.
The first two days were mainly class events with results as follows
Rose Bowl (A Class); Paul Rigge
David Jenkinson Trophy (B Class); Peter Thompson
Whilst the 'B' Class was well supported the handicap events were not so and Fylde member Philip Bass
and Pendle member Libby Dixon came in to make a competition of it - thanks to them.
The A Class also suffered with the event coming so soon after the Counties. Lancashire Captain and
Division One survivor Paul Rigge really had little to battle against.
After the first two days many B Class players went home and the remaining 8 were joined by local
member Vincent George to put in a bit of variety.
Pennine Cup (Handicap 6 - 12); Eileen Magee
David Hoyle Trophy (Handicaps 16+); Alison Larard
This Egyptian Event was quite close with Eileen Magee winning and Alison Larard a close runner-up.
The Doubles was fought in an all-play-all block with 3 pairings all coming out on 2 wins each.
The final line of small print was net hoops and the manager (Liz Wilson) and her partner Debbie James
came out the winners.
Peter Wilson, whose main purpose was to help out the manager and play as and when necessary came
away with two trophies!
Egyptian Cup - Fastest Game
Addict - Most games played.
This was first tournament for Debbie James (Beverley) and Alison Larard and Denise Foster
(York) All three were slightly anxious given it was their first tournament and all
three went away promising to come again next year! What lovely ladies - you will be welcome!
The ever popular form of the Game - GC, could only attract six entries to this A class Open event - pathetic!
Nevertheless, courts 1,3 & 5 were prepared to allow the luxury of single banked games to be contested and the format played (due to the low numbers) totally ignored the prescribed regulations for this series by contesting an all play all single block...twice.
Winner - by Net Hoops, event Manager David Cornes, (it was that close) from Paul Dowdall, with
Libby.Dixon & Jane Tewson in 3rd and 4th respectively.
Libby Reports;
Held in blustery but mainly dry conditions the Open Series Championship at Pendle was a closely
contested tournament with over a third of games going to the 13th hoop.
The lawns were in very good condition and the hospitality very welcoming. At the end of Day 1
there were three players on 4 wins and two on 3 wins.
Day two saw Jane Tewson (Ashby) take the lead with a win against Paul Dowdall (Pendle). By the
final round there were three players who could still win. Paul Dowdall and Libby Dixon (Pendle) went
head to head with Paul winning 7-4 .
In another match David Cornes (Crake Valley) beat Andrea Widdison (Ripon Spa) 7-4 so David and Paul
finished on 7 wins out of 10.
David was declared Championship winner with a superior hoop difference (plus 15 to Paul's plus 11)
losing his 3 matches 6-7 each time. David also managed a 12 yard jump shot to take a game to the
13th hoop against Paul Durkin (Ashby).
Match was interesting for a couple of reasons; Helen was playing in her first ever full lawn game
and Rigge wasn't !
The Pendle points came from 'ever-reliable' Jim & Libby.
Group resumed today (Mid-Week Tournament misplaced them last week) and again just 12 came -
Roadwork signs still being up, but they've finished.
Mike was week's winner, won every round.
Three Pendle Members entered this competition - Gill, Karen & Sharon.
A very warm welcome was received on a beautiful sunny day. The lawns at Crake were excellent as
was the hospitality. Friendly, competitive croquet was enjoyed by all. 'The Pendle Girls' were on
good form and although no silverware was brought home they proved to be formidable opponents.
Many of the games went to the 13th hoop.
Due to the games not being timed and the distance travelled we had to leave before the minor place
games were played. Gill and Karen were to play each other to decide 5th and 6th postion had time
permitted so were happy to call it a draw.
Mid-summer? Time for the Pendle AC Advanced weekend, freshly cut grass, championship hoops firmly
set into new holes, ready to greet this year's ten entries for a great tournament.
A random draw began the first round of this Swiss, and as expected with no time limits in place - some
staggering of game finishes occurred... mattered not, new pairing were quickly sorted.
Saturday started bright and mild, but temps soon dropped as a weather front moved through
(most players donned jumpers).
Most managed either three or four games on the first day. Sunday was not only warmer but even the
sun broke out as the rounds 'ticked' off.
All things shake out, so by the mid-afternoon, the silverware could be presented
Roasting/Baking Hot Day bought ten club members to Cemetery Road for a knock/practice this morning,
before the U3A 'Gang' turned up in force (no doubt the blue sky brought them out too)
This week,17 attended and the winner was (for the very first time) Barbara C
Pendle's squad of eleven his year attended the friendliness that is the 'Festival', back on it's
normal weekend this year (last in June) after C19 interference over past 2 years.
For this year's campaign, the club selected to concentrate on only three of the five Croquet variations
available, (the AC Advanced & GC Level were thought out of reach).
The weather also played it's part, with a quick downpour sending all players scampering for waterproofs,
to cover our 'team-strip' but the humour remained. Most of the squad repeated last year's tournament
dinner and again enjoyed a Great Greek meal after the first day's play.
A requested change in the running of the festival this year was introduced - scoring, and how each game
was recorded. Technology was used throughout in place of the 'big board' and so to the 'Big Reveal'
- no trophies, only memories this year since the teams finished; hcp AC 4/7, sht AC 6/6 & hcp GC 4/8.

for 2022 report.
The day started well with sunshine and light cloud. Play commenced at 9.50 and the Doubles were won
by Pendle 7/2,6/7,7/3.
In the singles Mike won in 2 games against Christine 7/3, 7/6. Karen had a hard two games against and experienced
player and winner of the Pendle B level, Tom. Karen lost 5/7, 3/7.
The sunshine continued and with rain forecast for 3pm the afternoon play moved quickly on.
Paul won 7/2,7/1 against Trevor. Libby lost 4/7,3/7 against John.
Mike was taken to 3 games against Tom winning through 7/3,3/7,7/3. Karen won in 2 games against Christine 7/3,7/3.
Both teams enjoyed an afternoon tea of cakes and all before the rain arrived.
Pendle won 5 games to 2 and move to the Semi finals against either Watford or Nottingham
Team thanks to Karen for mowing the lawns, Sheila for cleaning the clubhouse, Mike and Paul for the setting
up and clearing of lawns...Also to our cheering squad of Richard, Keith and Sharon.
First outing this season for our 'Advanced' team..... starts with a win!

Pendle hosted Bury Norths for another GC League match, and a day of good competative Croquet was
enjoyed.
Bury fielded an excellent team as the result reflected. However Pendle should not be
disheartened, they played well.
Andrew and Lesley both competed in there first league competition, so thanks & 'well dones' are due
to them...
Afternoon tea with enjoyable conversation was enjoyed by all. Bury were thanked for their good
company and wished a safe journey home. - Karen.
Today saw the LPG team host a very strong team from Bowdon.
The days play was undertaken under brief sunshine periods and cloudy skies.
Pendle team can be very proud of the outcome as they took their opponents to 7/6 five times,
and winning twice.
The days play saw Paul trigger to handicap 2, Libby up 12 points and Andrea even
Super day in the Welsh sun - team were made *very* welcome by the above hosts..loads of Tea and
Fresh Cream Cakes were supplied (no doubt in an attempt to knobble us).
Day's play unwound in our favour, but the real winner on the day was friendship & humour - both
of which abounded

On the hottest day of the year so far, both teams had to contend with fast, dry, brown grass (very fast) & match hoops left
at a setting from yesterday's Interclub contest(tight).
Thanks go to Helen Alcock who help prepare the more than ample meal provided by Robin
and enjoyed by all.

Today saw Pendle away to Bury's Whitehead Park.
The mornings play saw a strong start from the Pendle Team. Both Karen and Andrew winning
their first games against players far more experienced than themselves. At lunch the
score was 5/4 in Pendles favour. An excellent start from a team that had 2 members playing
in their first LPG match for Pendle. ( Andrew has only been playing 13 weeks).
In the afternoon the games progressed and it came down to the last game to see if there was
a win or a draw.
Unfortunately Andrew lost to Philip Nuttall 7/5 as he did in the first round.
A great days play with good company which meant an enjoyable day for all involved.
The outcome saw both Karen and Penny trigger down to 6 giving them problems in their entries
into future 'C' level competitions. Andrew ended up 32 points up on his index score - Libby.
A massive thank you to all club members who turned up to work for as much as they could
today, they included: Richard, Mike, Paul D, Karen, Gill, Libby, Graham, Andrew, Paul R,
and Lesley.
We managed to trim the East and South borders, lay flags in front of the north pavillion,
clear the entrance gates and develop an area to the south of lawn 1 to use as a
practice area (Will's lawn)
A brilliant day's work, now we need to plan to trim the north and west borders. A bonfire
is now on the cards to dispose of all the waste wood, then reclaim the land for car parking.
Good club spirit and camaraderie, well done members, saves going to gym!!..Sharon
Well, the office GC Tournament Committee have done us over again this year, setting
the Lancashire Open Championship weekend to compete for entries against an 'A' Level, an
'Open' grade & even the Home International's for the second year running.
Twelve originally entered as the fixture list was published this year, but one by one, drip by
drip, we had withdrawal after withdrawal, the last one being at 21:30 on the eve of the
tournament - long after the groundwork and draw had been done in preparation...unacceptable,
Against that backdrop, because it's more important, for continuality (IMO), that the 23rd
Lancashire International Open went ahead, the loyal few started block play on newly set courts,
again supplied on a rock hard freshly mown sun-parched surface cut to 4mm.
The original schedule was discarded, after discussion with the players and the decision made
to resolve matters within a single day - to avoid the forecasted 'Extreme Heat' event and the
UK's declared first 'National Heat Emergency'.
And so to the play in the baking 27oC heat, Single all-play-all block to sort out
full seeding order for KO title race.
Semi-finals were Bo3, but both only needed first two games to allow progression.
However the final & fight for the other two Ascot point places both required all three games
to resolve.
Johnson improved on last year's 3rd spot to get his hands on the 'David Hopkins' Bon Bon
dish.
Final Ascot finishing order; Johnson, Rigge, Dixon from Flexman
Thanks are due to Paul D for mowing and white lining all courts,
PR for court creation & managing & Karen for lunch run.
Twelve turned up today, including one new player who really enjoyed it and is keen to play
again, and everyone had a good time - probably helped by a refreshing breeze for the first
time for a while!
No overall winner today as no-one won all three games.
The days play was held under cloudy skies following some welcoming rain to soften the
parched lawns. Play was convivial and much chatter and laughter was heard throughout the day.
At lunch Pendle were 5-4 up with a few close games. Of the four, 7/6 games played in the
afternoon both teams scored 2/4. The final result being a Pendle win.
Both Andrew and Libby triggered in handicap; Andrew to a 7 and Libby to a 2. - Libby.
The Pendle team arrived after a night of rain locally to wet but true lawns in an idyllic
setting beside the river. A reviving drink was enjoyed before the games began.
Sheila and Sharon achieved a battling draw in the first doubles and the match remained close
during the initial games before a strong Crake Valley team pulled ahead before lunch and
consolidated their advantage with a strong afternoon performance. Games were completed as a
heavy shower swept in from the estuary.
The highlights of the day were Sheila winning her first points for the Club and Sharon's
outstanding 7-0 win against Crake's strongest player.
Drinks were enjoyed at the end of the day before departure. Congratulations to Crake and
many thanks for the meticulous planning and warm hospitality - Mike.
Pendle had a good win 5-2 against Southport. The Doubles pairing of Paul Dowdall and Andrew Gould ( playing his
first competitive match for the Club) had a good win followed by both Robin Delves and Andrew Webb winning
their respective singles in the morning.
In the afternoon both Andrew Webb and Robin won their Singles ,
while Andrew Gould played very well scoring 16 hoops but but lost by 8 hoops to Eileen Rossiter. Paul Dowdall lost
his match against Brian Lewis. - Andrew Webb.
Team arrived in good time and were warmly welcomed with biccies & brews in the (now repurposed) Bowls Club Room.
Day progressed in both good humour & sunny (slightly humid) weather, pleasing to report that all Pendle players managed
at least one win towards our winning total.
Our mid-week team gathered at Levens Hall for today's match from three different directions today!
Beautiful sunny day with high cloud greeted us, with the double gazebo already erected and the kettle
boiling, for shade & hydration. After a quick 3-0 drubbing, cake was supplied to soften the blow over lunch.
We needed all four remaining games..and came sooo close to grabbing them, taking two & losing the other two by
a single point... ah well, good team effort.

Following Watford's request for a weekend date we have explored Aug 13, 14, 20, 21, 27, 28,
Sep 3, 4 without success either due to lack of players from either team or from finding a
neutral venue that could accommodate us. We also looked at mid week dates of 22 or 25th August
also without success. As such it was unlikely that we would be able to complete the fixture
within the timeframe for the competition. i.e. 5 September.
The 4th September then became a date of choice but with Nottingham and Ashby not able to
accommodate our match, Edgbaston (Birmingham) was suggested but I felt it was too far for a
days play.
With the next round to be played before 25th September, and as this would be against a team
from the South of England I reluctantly decided to give Watford a walkover.
Watford will find it easier arranging a match against Roehampton or Guildford.
Thank you to everyone who has supported the Pendle and Craven Inter Club Shield Team.
I think did did very well getting to the Semi Finals and have retired undefeated.
Regards to all - Libby
Last week's few showers have returned the courts back to verdant green, but the downside being the grass really
sprang back to life and started growing again quickly - The attempt to mow it yesterday, to prepare for this
match totally overwhelmed the Deere & even the Allett struggled such was the length.
Pendle lost narrowly 3-4 in a tight match . In the morning doubles Andrew Webb with Andrew Gould ( only
his second competitive game ) won 17/11. Peter played Nigel and lost 18/26 which was a good effort .
Robin lost 12/17 also in a tight match.
In the afternoon Andrew beat Nigel 26/18 using his 4 bisques and Peter won his game 18/11.
Both Robin and Andrew Gould lost their games 12/18 and 17/26 respectively .
Considering his inexperience Andrew Gould played very well in his game and is learning fast
Thanks especially to Robin for bringing his own new mower to cut the lawns as the club's mower had a fault
Also thanks to Paul Dowdall for helping to set up the lawns before the match. He does a lot of
sterling work on the Club lawns
On an extremely hot day play commenced at 8:30 am with a view to beating the heat which was
forecast.
The 16 singles games were played and Bury were leading 8 - 6. It was vital that Pendle should
win both of the doubles games so the pressure was on. Alas, Pendle won the first 7 - 3 and
Bury forced a draw 4 - 4 in the other. The closeness of the competition is shown with
both teams running 88 hoops!
A good day of friendly competitive Croquet was had by all. Afternoon tea and cakes were enjoyed
in the shade with plenty of friendly conversation before Bury were wished a safe and
hopefully cool journey home - Karen
Today we welcomed the LPG team of Bury Sovereigns to Earby on a warm, muggy day where we
managed to avoid the forecasted showers with only one brief shower during the day.
Team won 11-7 with Paul winning 3 games, Mike 5 games and Andrea 3. Great TEAM effort.
Congratulations to Richard who triggered to a 3
The NW Federation Millennium AC Advanced was contested at Pendle & Craven Croquet Club over the
August weekend of 20/21st on parched mown brownish grass.
Twelve NW Members arrived bright and early to pre-ordered Bacon Butties, delivered through the
kitchen smokey haze (from the frying pans) - didn't affect the flavour though.. yum!
After quick practice knock, allowed to try and get to grips with the super fast courts and
firm, tight hoops, players started their un-timed games - well it is meant to be 'Advanced' after all!
Comments about play on Saturday? One pairing got to double bank with six other players
(a record surely?) - such was the 'speed' of their play, they got to see three other games start
and finish before they reached a result..
Weather? Two light quick showers blew through - not enough to warrant water-proofs or cool a
very warm day.
Due to the timing of the tournament dinner, one game was pegged down and the place locked up
while energy abounded - great meal & fab company.
Sunday; overnight heavy rain promised easier conditions for all and so it proved,
doubling the 'TPs' achieved in the sunshine but it also brought problem time for the manager.
After the day's first round, all the top seeds had beaten each other up - giving three tied in
top spot.....oops!
All things shake out (honest), and so the presentation; this year's 'Neil Williams recipient -
Rick Harding and the 'Woodlands' got awarded to Nigel Matthews
We were welcomed by Bowdon to some very quick lawns, especially after lunch with the warm weather.
The Pendle team performed outstandingly, losing only 3 games overall and winning 13-3 putting
us on top of the table (on game difference) with 2 matches to play
Both Catherine and Paul won all 4 of their games and both triggered their handicaps...
Catherine to a 2 and Paul to a 1.

Today we faced a Llanfairfechan team with plenty of bisques but we managed to put up
a good fight with many close games. However, we finally succumbed to lose 7-9.
Catherine won 3 games, Paul won 2 and Robin & Vince won one each
Many thanks to Mike who helped in setting up the lawns - Paul D.
Another good day of Croquet was enjoyed at Fylde on a very warm day.
Once again many of the games were closely fought often lost as our opponents had a huge
number of of free shots which they used expertly, Our inexperience in Handicap Croquet
was our downfall today.
We were wished a safe journey home after enjoying tea and cakes and plenty of
friendly conversation.
This was the last of the first round games. Sadly Pendle will not progress further.
However these competitions have proved to be a huge learning curve for all who took part.
Many who competed had not experienced competitive Croquet prior to entering this
competition. My ethos was that everyone who wished to play in a competition should be
offered the opportunity to play irrespective of ability or experience. Although we didn't
win we certainly proved to be formidable opponents on many occasions.
I am very proud to have been able to manage these games and want to say a big thank you
to all who put in such effort both on competition days and on the many practice days in
preparation for these competitions.
Thanks to: Mike Bradbury, David Carpenter, Penny Clark, Sharon Demaine, Andrew Gould,
Richard Mansfield, Cathy O'Brien, Lesley Perkins, Sheils Thompson, Gill Uglow -
My Super Handicap Golf Croquet Team of 2022 - you were all marvellous - Karen
The Fylde team were welcomed to Pendle on a warm and overcast day but, fortunately,
the forecasted rain never materialised.
The lawns were wet first thing but quickly
dried out (and sped up) as the day progressed.
Congratulations to Garry who won all four of his games. Libby won 3 with Catherine
and Paul winning 2 games each.
Libby achieved a peg out of both balls against Barry with an yard roll up and Paul
managed to get a peel through rover to peg out against Liz.
Pendle's win means we finish second in the NW League by 1 point to Westmorland
Today saw the start of the working parties to undertake the painting jobs required at the
club before the weather changed.
Paul D, Vincent, Pauline and Libby put in a full day to make a good start on the Northern
Pavillion. The weather was warm so the paint dried fast.
The exterior was completed (though there is lots of touching up to do in places) and we thank
Peter Dewhurst for his donation of paint.
The interior is next as well as the sheds and clubhouse. - Pauline volunteered her husband
to clean all the brushes from today... A big thank you as I hate cleaning paint brushes.
- Libby..
(back for some more on Thursday).
Today saw Richard, Cathy, Mike and Libby make a start of the exterior of the pavilion.
Still lots to do!
The Tournament had originally 12 entered but one person had a late withdrawal due to
an injury. Plans were made for 11 players to compete which would see one player sitting
out each round.
Saturday was a dull but warm day.
After a minutes silence for the passing of our Sport's Patron
(Queen Elizabeth II) and the formalities of the Managers briefing,
play got underway at 9.15am. As one player had arrived feeling unwell, it was decided to begin the tournament by moving to the round where they would sit out, to allow time to see if they could participate. Unfortunately even after an hours rest it was evident this would not be possible. The Day Manager, Gill Uglow and ROT, David Cornes quickly reorganised the playing list to be within the Tournament Guidelines and accommodating the games played. With 9 games to complete in the all play all format it was hoped that a minimum of 7 games would be completed on the first day.
By lunchtime 5 games had been completed as players were playing expeditiously despite a
raft of 7/6 outcomes. Surprisingly the afternoon session had a further 4 games completed
by 4.30pm, A great result - 9 games completed in one day.
The winner of the all play all was Paul Dowdall from Pendle with 8 wins. The other
placings were Charles Sale(7), Mike Bilton(7) and Tom Grievson (5), who narrowly went
through on hoops from Garry Wilson. The draw for the Knock out was Paul vs Tom,
Charles vs Mike. All other players were to contest an all play all for the Plate.
Sunday began with a heavy dew and worm casts on all the lawns, but these were cleared
away by the drag mat. The observing players decided to give the operator of the tractor
a score by holding up the lawn markers much to the amusement of everyone.
Sunshine and a warm wind saw the start of play. The first round of play in the
Semi finals saw Paul go through to the final with 7/4, 1/7, 7/4 victory and in the second
semi Charles won through a hard fought three games 7/6, 2/7, 7/5.
The final provided great interest for the viewing gallery as each hoop was vigorously
contested by both Paul and Charles. The result was a win for Charles 7/6, 7/6.
Third and 4th places went to 3 games with Mike winning through with 3/7, 7/4, 7/3.
The Plate was contested by the remaining 6 players and again the results show there were
some very close games. The overall winner was Libby Dixon with 4 wins but it should be
noted that everyone in the Plate had 2 wins each.
The presentation to the winner followed the Managers thanks to all the hard work done by
Club members in readying the lawns for the tournament; Paul Dowdall, Mike Bradbury and
Andrew Gould. Further thanks mentioned were to Gill Uglow who not only did the Day
Management duties and catering but also to David Cornes who's help in advising on
managing this level of Tournament and undertaking the ROT duties.
Charles Sale (Ealing) in his acceptance of the Trophy mentioned that he loved coming
North to play in Tournaments as he found them to be so friendly, welcoming and well run
A celebration afternoon tea was enjoyed by all with cake provided by Sandra Cornes who was also celebrating her birthday. Both Mike Bradbury and Andrew Gould from Pendle were competing in their first Tournament and they both ended with a positive result to their handicap. They both said they had gained a lot from playing in terms of playing tactics, knowledge of the rules and where they need to concentrate their practice routines.
Rigge again got invited to compete in the CA's Level AC Eights, hosted at Southport Club,
and this year he was joined by our own rising star & Lancashire Team mate, Lorna
After five days play, in mainly sunshine, Rigge could only manage to scrape six wins..Lorna
however dominated from the off, and achieved 11 from the possible 14.
Paul, who also managed the event for the CA, was delighted (honestly!) to present her with this
prestigious trophy.
Elsewhere (down in Ramsgate) Essler competed in the 'Selectors' - worth the trip down, he was the beaten finalist.
Trying this year to resolve this internal on a single day, so an all-play-all block to entertain the
few who entered. After an enjoyable day despite the 'nippy' weather..
The Year's Club Title went to Andrew who had 7 wins with the runner up place going to defending
Champion; Mike on 5 wins
In descending order, the rest finished; Paul D, Libby and Sharon(4 wins), Dave Carpenter(3 wins) and Richard Mansfield had 1,
Penny propped up the field.
Gill. .
Back to basics - this internal used to be played to Base 6..so the members who wished to compete, turned up
for a weekend's play & we reverted back to B6.
After a few last minute withdrawals, the manager pitched the idea of resolving play into a single day AND
also allowing untimed games..
Some cooperation would be required; doubling up on games (playing at least two games simultaneously);
the major game to concentrate on played with Prime Balls (3 rounds each), with a second game to be played
against next opponent with secondary's (Introducing 'double banking with yourself') - with both
players hitting a ball 'as and when they could' in that game,
After four (untimed) games each, yes FOUR, we had a three-way tie for the title, with three on three wins
each..and helpfully they'd beat each other up, so 'play-off' time!..only kidding..
No one had any appetite for more play to resolve the gridlock,or return tomorrow,so....Net Hoops were
pressed into service.
And the winner for 2022 is... our Garry with his new working Bat.

Eight members enjoyed a great day of play and chat. We even got a few jobs done on the club
house and grounds.
Libby reports; Today saw 9 members turn up for the 2nd Winter Social Saturday.
The play included Riggey playing Paul D (7/6), Libby (7/2)and Cathy (7/4) in the Fort Hoop.
Four wins now in total. He is hunting for the elusive 5th ...step up all!
The rest of the games saw a combination of GC and AC. In an attempt to garner more AC in interested
members a trial of alternative shot Pro/Am was tried. Ged partnered with Cathy and Gabby partnered
with Karen.
A great day in sunshine and brisk winds.....See you next week.
Monday saw the container and the ceiling of the summerhouse painted, installation of CCTV cameras and
signage.
Leaves were swept up and the front gutter emptied.
The clubhouse interior has been stripped so painting can be undertaken tomorrow.
A big thank you to Vincent, Paul Dowdall, Sharon and Pauline for their help - Libby
Tues saw Vincent and myself make a good start on the clubhouse internal painting with preparing walls
and about 7/8 of first coat applied. The walls will definitely require 2 coats and we have
skirting, windows and other woodwork to do.
I will be going over this Thursday to continue the task. Please could I have some more volunteers
to help to speed up this painting. I am sure all club members will welcome a nicely painted clubhouse.
Thursday the team of Cathy, Karen, Mike and Paul made excellent progress in the painting and reorganisation of clubhouse. The interior is looking much brighter with the paint choice.
After 2 days of torrential rain, Saturday saw bright sun and cloudy skies. Eight members
enjoyed multiple games of croquet and gave positive feedback on the ongoing renovation of the
clubhouse and facilities.
Painting of the interior of clubhouse is moving along with possible completion of painting
by next week.
A new washbasin has been installed in the gents toilet and the broken toilet has been fixed
with a new handle.
Reorganisation of the two sheds has enabled one to be allocated to a mallet and lawn bin
storage area making the garage freer for the movement of ground maintenance equipment.
Monday saw Penny and Libby continue on the office area with the painting.
Used Vax (on loan from Pauline) on clubhouse carpet and it has come up pretty good.
Paul D has continued with the bin and mallet store organisation.
The hedge on the Cemetery Road side all done and down to height of fence posts.
Wen, Andrew G, Libby, David M & Paul D organised the bonfire woodpile. Eileen & Sharon continued with office make-over and the Chair *finally* sorted the Kitchen Light!
As Meatloaf sang, "2 out of 3 ain't bad" and so it proved as yet again our plans for Bonfire Night
on the correct day were 'washed out' with our ready pile of wood again being far too wet to light.
The day began, well at 11am, with seven members contesting the Club's Internal 1 Ball competition
(this year played level) and after much sheltering from the permanent rain and 6 rounds, this
year's champ could be announced - Paul R.
By 4pm the Pavilion filled with 20 hungry members for the pre-firework meal (ED - and a warm) then
the donated coloured gunpowder was ignited and enjoyed safely.
Today saw 8 members and one visitor enjoy a great days croquet in the sunshine. An all play
all was initiated as the majority of players were of the golf persuasion.
At the end of the day Paul Dowdall won with 4 wins.
Two winter lawns have been installed and everyone enjoyed playing on these new lawns. A big thank
you to Paul D for the mowing and setting out and to all who helped with the string and setting
up of the lawns.
The parking solution at the club can't come soon enough as most members were not able to park
in the adjacent parking lot. It was great to see the committee have moved forward with the
preparation of our own permanent parking area. I think more working parties will be forthcoming.
Today saw 4 members turn up to undertake two priority jobs. Relaying the flag stones in front of
the sheds and the Bonfire to get rid of all the rubbish and hedge clippings.
Paul and Sharon concentrated on the flagstones whilst Peter and Libby the bonfires - Yes we eventually
had two. (Both areas were well inspected before setting fire to make sure no hedgehogs were at risk).
Paul D, Peter D , Sharon and myself managed to complete the bonfires and relay the second row of
flagstones.
The site was also visited by a landscaper to give an estimate for our new car park.
Work begins to improve our user experience for next season
Most Improved (Female) Player at AC for the year is our own Member Lorna Dewar and she's been awarded The Steel Memorial Bowl
With the latest phase of the ground works complete, and the recent spell of frost now
thawing, the two winter courts have been re-established, now with string boundaries.
Play started on time, but was interupted as it started to snow - Snow in December...
Preparation for Santa's visit perhaps?
Just received the news of the passing of croquet powerhouse that was Ron Welch.
Ron, a long standing member of this club, served this club in every capacity; coach, manager,
team player, even being our Chair for a stint a decade ago but that only touches the surface of
who Ron was.
Prior to his move north onto our patch, he was very active in the Croquet world down in
the south-east, coaching and managing events throughout the 80's & 90's, claiming various
unloved bowling green's from London Boroughs for our sport, indeed both Ealing Croquet Club and
Merton clubs were established by 'our' Ron this way.
Such was Ron's dedication to our Sport, Joan his wife felt the need to also play, in
order to see him! (she to served on our Committee and became our Secretary).
Ron passed peacefully in a Care Home on the 30th October, having suffered poor & deteriorating
health in recent years.
The CA's President, Quiller Barrett (2009-2022) says;
"Ron was the first person I met in croquet, he had a real passion for our sport. I joined
the Ealing Club when I started and was bowled over by his enthusiasm and by his excellent
coaching that got beginners on their way."
R.I.P.Ron
